St. Kilda is a tiny group of islands in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, one of which was populated until 1930.
There are many amazing accounts of strange and wonderful things that happened in St. Kilda but one of my favourite, more humorous stories was of a young girl who wore the vicar’s hearth rug to church as a scarf. Because new, fashionable items were so rare on St. Kilda, the women on the island held a bidding war to see who was lucky enough to wear the rug to church the next week!
